Saturday night, it's time to party! Part two for the April Babes' birthday celebration. The setting is at ShBoom Nightclub in San Ramon. Party-goers Anna, Grace, Kathy, Margaret, and Jenny got into the club by 10:15pm. I am ready to go in with my ID and all but Mina forgot her ID at home so we started to walk towards the car to go back home to retrieve her card. Then came to the scene party-goers Toni and Gurpreet. Preet, who really liked her picture in her old ID, kept it all this time with her. Loaned the card to Mina and hoped that the card would pass muster. Now the line to the club is longer and took a lot of time to get to the door. Toni and Gurpreet got in, but unfortunately the loaned card was not accepted because of the invalidated whole on it! (one would think its because it's a totally different person right?). So that's it, I thought we really have to get home to get Mina's ID. With that single thought in mind we drove 27 minutes to our apartment in Newark. When we got home, I felt like cold water was poured over me when Mina told me she doesn't have her car and house keys with her. Why the cold? The fact is, I knew that in the first place, and also the FACT that I don't have my house keys either! Kathy was the only one who brought the house keys. Kathy, who all of you might have deduced by now is still partying in San Ramon! It totally slipped my mind that I don't have house keys! The very first time I left the house without those keys is the day that I needed it most. When we left ShBoom all that is in my mind was drive home, drive home, get ID go back. The tiny detail about the keys completely eluded me. Sigh*** So what to do now right? If we go back to ShBoom, get the house keys from Kathy, drive back to Newark to get the ID, drive back to San Ramon to party it would take us a good one and a half hours worth of driving, 20 minutes getting the keys, putting in more gas for the car, in out of the house, in line to get into the club, it'll be almost time to go home when we will be ready to party! Sigh*** So to pass the time, (we can't get into the house right, can't hang in there) we decided to see the movie Sunshine Cleaning in Union Landing. By the time the movie would be over, the party would have dwindled by then. We'll just pick up Kathy and Margaret at Grace's then bring them home.
Thinking back, it IS funny. I don't think I would be able forget this unique scenario. I'm glad the girls were able to enjoy themselves at the club. Glad too that I am able t laugh at myself for this little comedy of errors.

Age Is Just A Number
I would often kid that I would miss writing the 2 in the two digit number that is my age, now I have to use 3! It is silly but hey, that's is how I feel. I thought the big 3-oh would be such a dramatic change but you know, it's not. Still the same old me here, still interested in blogging, video games and cruising around in the car.
It's same old me but I'll try my best to be more mature, and more mindful for my future.
Age might be just a number but it's counting forward and we all have to deal with it. From a wee baby to an old crone, with time comes age and its inevitable. But what is great with age is its friend experience, and I intend to live basking with life's experiences. Romantic experiences might be scarce or none existent for now, but that is not the only thing life could offer. I would like to see the glass half full. Romance may not be for me for now but I have a loving family, great friends, health and a thriving career. I thank God everyday for these blessings.
To all those who remembered me on my birthday, thank you for the heartfelt greetings and flattering miscalculations of my age. He-he.
I may be 30 and single, but I'm definitely loving it!

The Modern Abacus
I can still remember, when I was in elementary, our small school had purchased a PC for the students' use. But somehow, I already gone to 1st year high school and transferred out of that school, I never sat or even glimpsed at that PC.
High School, it was in my third year, that the coed school that I transferred to, offered a computer subject. It is a bigger school, it can afford to provide a PC to two students at a time. Wow major improvement huh! We were taught Lotus 1-2-3 (we can say it was Excel's ancestor), word processing (I forgot the name of the program) and Basic Programming. Everything was pretty simple then. No elaborate graphics. The screen is black and the characters were the ones lighted, unlike that of today. When you turn on the computer, you type commands to get to the program that you need. No mouse yet! I was really enjoying that class until.... ok brief history, no heavy duty hard drives and CDs then, we were using Floppy disks and micro disks. So what happened that got me scared of computers was when one fateful class, I was assigned to collect the floppy disks from each student and to keep them in the classroom cabinet. But the clumsy teen that I was back then (well I guess I'm still clumsy but definitely not a teen anymore, huhu) I tripped on one of the computer cords and the disks came flying out of my hands. My teacher, to my horror, chided me in front of the class and blamed me if the disks got broken and all of the class' works gets ruined it will be ALL my fault! Of course back then, when you're a kid learning something foreign to you, the teacher's words were law and that they know everything. When I got home that day, I cried my eyes out! I couldn't cry right there and then. My crush was watching, it was soooo embarrassing! I prayed and prayed those stupid disks were ok. They were made of hard plastic but duh, then I didn't know that they were not that sensitive. The next day of course my fears were allayed because they're still working fine. Our files didn't got erased or anything. Now thinking back, it was pretty funny what happened, but of course the young Luisa is now apprehensive when it comes to computers.
It was 4 years after that when my family got our very first computer. After that 3rd year High School computer class I never had any computer training again. I learned the ropes with the help of our first computer at home. Trial and error. This time, computers were more user friendly with the emergence of the Windows OS. Today the latest version of Windows is Vista right? Well my first encounter with Windows is...... Windows 3.0! Imagine! How old! I owe a lot to Windows 3.0. Since I learned by myself and with a very early OS, by the time I got to 4th year college, where in my last semester of nursing school we have this computer literacy class that used Windows 98, the class was a breeze! Windows 98 was already very user friendly, meaning it's very easy to use. We can say I'm old schooled with the 3.0, I already know how to work my way around the newer programs! It's like your McGyver-ing it. I think you guys got my point.
When I got to the US, when I was already able, I bought my first laptop. I liked it very much. This got the ball rolling. I got fascinated with what the modern PC could do. And with all the information you could get over the net, the possibilities were endless.
Then came the iPhone, my first ever Apple product. Well I guess, second, I got myself an iPod shuffle first. But then again, that was just an iPod. The iPhone is like a computer and internet in your pocket!. I've gotten more fascinated with tech stuff. Before I bought my digital camera and my TV, I've spent couple of hours, researching in the internet different specifications, models and prices for me to have an informed buy, and in the process, I gained a bit more knowledge about modern technology stuff. Thus my earning the title "Tech girl of Pedi ward" (I think it was my friend Manji that came up with the Tech-girl label since she adapted calling me Lui-girl, a pet name my friend Grace, christened me with).
Then, I fell in love!!! With the MacBook that I bought. I'm sooo impressed with the Mac that I wanted to get the MacPro, but I guess that's over indulgence already. It's kinda expensive, so that just have to live in my wish list for awhile. I'm still a PC person, you can't erase that. But I'm also a practicing Mac person now. Hehe.
My manager at work (present) asked me when we got the new computer charting at work if I had previous experience with computers at my previous job in the Philippines. I answered her with a flat "none." I used to work in a tertiary hospital in the Philippines but while I was working there, no computer charting yet. I am happy that I am able to grasp this new information about computers at work. Personally, it got the charting part of our job a lot easier. Some might disagree but I'll let them hold on to their own opinion.
So you can see, my history with computers go a long way. I even have this dream that I wish I could study programming on the side while practicing nursing. I'm not drifting away from nursing, I see it as a branching out, specially now that computers are working its way into the health care system. I wish I could build programs that could facilitate ease of work for both nurses and IT. I'll probably do it soon if opportunity knocks.
I would like to say or rather advise to my friends and colleagues that are apprehensive with computers. Change is hard, but we have a learning curve. If you ever get scared of the machine called the computer... always keep this in mind. "It's just a glorified calculator my friend!"

My LiftOne Project

I've always dreamed that someday I could be big enough a person to contribute something to change the world. I'm not a millionaire, a politician, a princess or a celebrity. How could little ol' me make an impact or even a small dent in the armor of injustices in this world?
Enter, Children International. They gave me the opportunity to make a difference in the lives of two children that needed my help. Now with the LiftOne Project, well meaning friends and colleagues (that's YOU reading this) can help me in this noble cause. Click the link in this blog entry to learn more. Visit my project site, see what this project could do. I'm not forcing you to do anything. Just try to visit the site and see for yourself. Thank You!

A Week Long Fling
Why I rented a car for a week you ask? It is a long story. Well, the California DMV has this strict rule that all vehicles operated and registered need to have an insurance policy. Once you buy a policy for your car, your insurance company sends an electronic report to DMV stating that you and your car have valid vehicle liability insurance. They even created a branch in their office to monitor this. They are called Vehicle Registration Financial Responsibility Program or VRFRP. They send out notices and suspend vehicles without proper insurance coverages. Like what they said in their letter, their goal is to encourage compliance with California's financial responsibility.
On 2/7, I received in the mail a notice of suspension from them for my 2007 Toyota Corolla. Imagine my surprise! I do have a valid insurance, I am covered by Progressive. The letter that I received was a suspension effective that same day! I didn't even get a warning. The first thing I did after recovering from my initial disbelief was to call Progressive. I told them what happened, we checked the numbers and information if all is the same, and it is. So after apologies they sent the electronic report, and faxed a copy of my ID to VRFRP just to cover all bases. Then I called the VRFRP, they said that they did send me a warning a month ago but I didn't respond. I know I didn't get that letter. Anyway, I informed them that the info was faxed and sent by the insurance company. The person I was talking too said in a cold tone that it will take 72 hours before they check on the info and another 72 hours after receipt to process reinstatement of registration. So what was I going to do! I can't drive my car without registration. You'll never know when you'll get flagged down by a cop on the road. I wouldn't wish to get a ticket and probably worst scenario get the car impounded.
Ok, so this means my car needs to stay put for at least a week right? My sweet roomate Mina, offered to drive me around when she could, but our schedules doesn't fit together. We've thought of riding a cab to and from work but I figured that would be expensive considering we are now living 10 miles away from work. Hmm, so I went online and researched rental cars. I booked a seemingly good deal from Budget, but when we got there the deal was not so much hot. I didn't like the car. They offered another one but for a higher price. So, I decided to look for another rental place. We then went to Avis. There is where I got the Pontiac G6 four door mid-sized sedan. It was the only one available, but the price was more reasonable than the deal from Budget. I took the car home and used it for a week. It was a decent enough car, a lot different from my compact Corolla. In size and in engine size. There is so much leg room that I have to move closer to the steering wheel so that my short legs could reach the foot pedals. Down side though, it eats more gas! It was a handsome car, but I am glad when the week was up and that my car registration was reinstated.
So that was my week long fling..... with a Pontiac!
